Troon Charity Supporting Playlist For LIfe

An  Ayrshire music festival is helping a pioneering project which aims to help sufferers from dementia to counter some of its worst effects,

Live@Troon has already paid for care homes in the town to train their staff to provide Playlists for Life for residents.

The playlists contain each resident's favourite music, tunes which hold particular significance and bring back important memories.

The Playlists for Life project was launched by TVs presenter and journalist Sally Magnusson in 2013, after she had been impressed by the effect of personally meaningful music on her late mother’s dementia.

Her experiences with her mother encouraged her to write the memoir Where Memories Go: Why dementia changes everything.

Since then hundreds of families have seen for themselves how significant songs and pieces of music can help them stay connected to their loved ones, who are often able to protect some of their most cherished memories from the ravages of dementia.

Live@Troon have already raised money for Playlist for Life training courses, which they offered to care homes in the town. All four accepted the offer.

This year the festival, which runs from Thursday, September 8 until Sunday, September 11, is holding a special Playlist for Life tea dance on its final day.

Live@Troon chairman Alan Clayton said: "It seemed only right that a festival which celebrates the sheer joy of music should support a project which harnesses that joy to help people protect part of their identity from the terrible effects of that most devastating of conditions, dementia.

"Anyone who has seen for themselves how a specially selected playlist of music can improve the quality of life for families of dementia sufferers cannot fail to have been convinced of the benefits of this project."

Live@Troon's lineup this year is an eclectic one, encompassing the huge hits of tribute band Abbamania, the cutting edge hip-hop of Scotland's own Hektor Bizerk and the best Hollywood movie themes performed by the Glasgow Studio Orchestra.
